Captains Monthly Newsletter June 2023

Hi everyone

Welcome to the second issue of Captains Newsletter.

We are well into the golfing season now and we have played the first few majors of the year. The WF Parks, George Maw & Ed Fox. Congratulations to all of the winners and qualifiers. I must add the George Maw is the first time I have qualified for the last 32 in the 12 years being at Wheatley. It just shows never give up you never know.

Wheatley Teams

The Sheffield Union team matches   have begun and I am proud to say after 5 games Wheatley scratch team are top of division 2. We lost our first match at Hillsborough 6-2 but to be honest it could have gone either way. we then won our last 4 matches, keep it up guys division 1 beckons.

The 16-18 team have had a more average start W1-D1-L2 but I am sure we have the squad to keep us in the top division.

Big shout out to Conor Clarke who as club champion played in the County Champion of Champions Trophy at Hallamshire and came a very respectable 3rd place well done Conor.

Also, a big shout out to our junior captain Joel Johnson who played in the Yorkshire boys’ competition at Moor Allerton this week and came 15th out of 71 players. Great effort Joel.

Ladies Danum CUP

I attended the ladies Danum Cup on Saturday at Hickleton Golf Club, we all had a fantastic day and very well hosted by Hickleton, although we did not come away with a win. I know all the ladies who played and those who caddied had a wonderful day. Next year ladies at Wheatley?

Clubhouse

In the last newsletter I mentioned the works to the clubhouse and the SGM, I am proud to say that the membership voted emphatically to approve the plans and these I believe are due to start early July. We will have a fantastic looking clubhouse when completed.

Up and coming.

June is going to be a very busy month for me personally, 10th June is the men’s Danum Cup at Doncaster Town Moor Golf Club. I want to wish the players picked to represent Wheatley every success and bring the trophy home. All spectators are welcome first tee off is 1pm.prostate cancer day is on Friday 16th June we still have 4 to 5 team spaces to fill. This is a charity event that is really important to men so your support is greatly appreciated. And if you are unable to play donations in to the office will be greatly appreciated.

Saturday 17th June

Captains’ day is now open and filling up quite nicely. This is a fun golf day with Captains party in the evening with a Mexican buffet and entertainment. Your support will be greatly appreciated. Bring your partners and have a fun evening with friends and club members. Casual dress. Tickets available from Sophie at the bar.

Other events in June which will give our course the high profile we need include the:

English golf union race to Woodhall spa regional final on Sunday 18th June. All spectators to watch some great golf will be very welcome.

Knockout Competitions.

These have all now started good luck to all. Further updates as we move through to finals weekend.

To finish I am enjoying my captaincy and the support from membership. I am pleased with how the club is developing and look forward to the benefits of our new sponsor Eco Power supply to us in the coming months.

The course is looking fantastic and all the positive comments I have had from members is very encouraging for Neil Bishop and his team.

Enjoy your golf while the sun is shining
